In today’s world, the logistics is very important in our lives. Without it we wouldn’t have food on our table, no materials to build our homes, no cars to move ourselves around places. So finally, if we look at it, everything we have it’s because of logistics. Our lives would be very different without it, especially in a world like today where everything is about technology. If we go just a little bit back in time and look at the trucks, first: their look was not aerodynamic, so they were using more fuel, which is not too good for the environment. A lot of companies or individual are reluctant to change their trucks for a better fuel economy, less pollution, means better air for us to breath.
The best that the companies could do is to change the look of their trucks by having them more aerodynamic, at that point less fuel would be use, because if we compare a truck with a square look and one that’s more aerodynamic, the aerodynamic would save at least 15 to 25 percent fuel than the square one, which it means per year it could save up to 25 850 litres a year, for a driver who drives 160 000 kilometers a year. Tires, another component to save some fuel, the rolling resistance of the tires is 35 percent of the energy consume by the truck. But if you use wide base tire other than being softer on the drive, you make a fuel economy of 5 percent, so on a long ride it means a lot. And one of the great things, you can also use those tires on a trailer, so we are talking about some more fuel economy, it could be up to 10 percent, because the rolling resistance is related to the heat generated by the tire’s sidewalls and tread design as they flex and squirm, because the wide base has two sidewalls instead of four.
Now if we go on with the trailer, expecting to save more fuel, there are some devices we could add to make it better. Having the so called “windtamer” that avoid accumulating the snow and dust around the back axles, brakes and their components. For the sides of the trailer we have the side skirts, which it prevents the wind from going under the trailer and causing at that point a resistance, proven to save 7 percent on fuel including the “windtamer” it go up to 8.5 percent. Also helping the fuel economy, on both extremity of the trailer, the wing gap fairing that is placed in front of the trailer for a saving of 2 more percent. Also to the back of the trailer, having the “smartail” for another economy of 4.5 percent.
So with all those aspect of the logistics and trucking, it will be nice to see a company taking place that will be conscientious to all the above suggestions that has been made to change the efficiency of the industry.
